Completion of the construction of the new Rockhampton Museum of Art
Construction of the new $ 36 million Rockhampton Museum of Art, slated to open in early 2022, is now complete and will include large flexible gallery spaces, multi-purpose educational spaces, restaurant, retail space retail and top floor reception area overlooking the Fitzroy River.
Queensland Deputy Prime Minister Steven Miles today joined Queensland Minster for the Arts Leeanne Enoch to walk the project, funded to the tune of $ 15 million through the state government’s Building Our Regions program and of the investment in Arts Queensland.

Minister Enoch added that âthe next step in the transformation of the new Rockhampton Museum of Art, which is six times the size of the old Rockhampton Art Gallery, will be to relocate the gallery’s prestigious collection of modern Australian art.
âWith additional exhibition space and improved technical features, the new museum can showcase even more of its magnificent collection of contemporary works by artists such as John Brack, Arthur Boyd, Russell Drysdale, Sidney Nolan, Jeffrey Smart and Margaret Olley, and accommodate travelers of national significance. exhibitions.
Rockhampton member Barry O’Rourke said the new Rockhampton Museum of Art will feature artists from Queensland and offer an expanded program of community engagement events by advising “one of the first exhibitions planned for next year is a solo exhibition by local artist Luke Roberts who received Queensland Government funding of $ 49,800 through the Queensland Arts Showcase program, fulfilling the museum’s goal of showcasing Queensland artists.
The Queensland government’s investment in the new Rockhampton Museum of Art aligns with the government’s Creative Together roadmap to activate local Queensland places, strengthen Queensland communities and tell Queensland stories.
Rockhampton area mayor Tony Williams said it was fantastic to reach this point in the delivery of the new Rockhampton Museum of Art adding âover the next few months we will be moving to one of the most important regional collections of Australian modern art and prepare to open the doors of this major artistic hub to our community early next year.
