MSU brings museum art to downtown East Lansing

Several reproductions of artwork from the MSU Broad Art Museum’s permanent collection now line the Place Project’s public space activation along Albert Avenue, adjacent to the north side of the Division Street Garage, 181 Division St .
According to former DDA President Peter Dewan, who was instrumental in establishing this partnership, “the collaborative effort of the City of East Lansing and the MSU Broad Art Museum is one of many art-themed initiatives that the city has launched to support businesses and attract residents and visitors. downtown as the city emerges from the pandemic. “
The works selected from the permanent collection of the MSU Broad Art Museum range from the mid-1800s to contemporary and represent diverse artistic perspectives. Different sets of reproductions will take turns being installed in the art panels of the Division Street parking garage and, as new reproductions are installed, previous reproductions will be removed and moved to other public spaces in the center. -city.
In addition to the reproductions on display along Albert Avenue, several favorite works of art from the community will soon be appearing in the museum’s galleries. The MSU Broad Art Museum plans to open an exhibition featuring works from the permanent collection in early 2022 to celebrate the museum’s 10th anniversary.
The Place project is part of the DDA’s downtown economic revival strategy which began at the end of 2020 and will continue throughout 2021. The Place project aims to increase pedestrian traffic and the dynamism of the center. city by engaging and collaborating with community stakeholders, activating underused public spaces, piloting new city programming, establishing partnerships with local businesses and testing tactical urban planning concepts such as pop-up parks and parklets.
