Temple of Alternate Histories – Announcements
Initiated by Anna Run Tryggvadottir, Thorleifur Orn Arnarssonand Cassandra Edlefsen Lasch.
The transdisciplinary art project Temple of Alternative Histories (TAH) revisits the many entanglements between nature and culture and seeks to discuss current perceptions of time and matter. How can mythological stories impact nature and vice versa? By highlighting generative processes, TAH facilitates reflection on the pressing issues raised by the current environmental crisis. Taking into account the narrative shifts of history, the project as a whole attempts to readdress the hierarchical boundaries between artistic and scientific disciplines. What spaces and forms of mediation can enrich a public, artistic and scientific debate on current events?
How do we ask the questions to bring to the oracles of our time?
TAH invites the general public to Kassel with international professionals, visual artists, performers, as well as cognitive scientists, care practitioners and non-human subjects. The procedural project takes place between June and September 2022 at the Staatstheater Kassel, coinciding with documenta fifteen. Consisting of three major components – an art installation, a public program and a stage work – TAH is inspired by the origins of theater as a ritual meeting place, a structure built around an empty metaphorical space intended to stage and to accept meaning. All aspects aim to explore transformative, potentially cathartic, community possibilities for our time.

In Temple of Materialized Storieskinetic sculptures of Anna Run Tryggvadottir derive directly from the materials used to build the surrounding architecture of the theatre, reflecting the lost interdependencies in the human relationship to the excavated and earth-excavated elements. His audio work, Reflective materials (2022), offers visitors a journey to contemplate these elements through the prism of a “factual” narration.
Being part of Emerging Stories Templethe mutant and in situ work of Lundahl & Seitl, Symphony of a Missing Piece – Echoes of Alternate Histories (2022), responds to the Staatstheater Kassel and TAH with a choreography of movements, and technological experiments that trigger a process where the visitor perceives a present in negotiation between meaning and reason.
